Anjana Devi: Revolutionizing Agriculture in Mayali, Uttarakhand

Breaking Boundaries:

In a remote, hilly village of Mayali in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, where societal norms have long confined women within their homes, 37-year-old Anjana Devi is rewriting the narrative. As a homemaker turned pioneer, she is leading a transformative movement in her village by empowering women through employment on her farm.

A Journey of Transformation:

Anjana’s journey began in 2022 when she attended a natural farming training program in Almora. At that time, she had little idea of the profound impact this training would have on her life and the lives of other women in her village. Traditionally, women in Mayali were seldom allowed to step outside their homes, let alone pursue financial independence. However, Anjana’s newfound knowledge and determination began to change that.

Learning the Art of Natural Farming:

During the training, Anjana and other farmers learned various aspects of natural farming. They were introduced to Neemastra, which acts as a natural pest repellent, protecting crops from various insects and pests, enhancing soil fertility, and promoting plant growth without the harmful effects of chemical pesticides. They were trained in using modern farming equipment such as weeder machines and poly-house techniques. They also learned about the importance of soil quality, the use of cow dung and cow urine, and the benefits of vermicomposting. These practices not only improved the health of their crops but also increased their profitability.

The Success of Multi-Cropping:

One of the most significant lessons Anjana learned was the technique of multi-cropping. Today, she successfully grows paddy, potatoes, and onions on her farm. From the sale of just two quintals of potatoes, she earns a profit of Rs. 15,000, a remarkable achievement in her village.

Changing Mindsets and Improving Health:

Reflecting on her journey, Anjana shared, “Initially, we believed we knew everything about natural farming due to our proximity to nature. However, the training taught us the importance of precise use, timing, and the right quantities of natural inputs. Understanding which seeds to use and when to use them has drastically improved the quality of our produce.”

A Ripple Effect of Empowerment:

The impact of Anjana’s efforts extends beyond her farm. The once barren and infertile soil of her region has been rejuvenated through vermicomposting, resulting in fertile land that yields healthy crops. The Art of Living organization has also helped by providing good quality seeds, solving a significant problem for local farmers.

A Beacon of Hope:

The benefits of Anjana’s work have not gone unnoticed. Locals, who have suffered health issues from consuming chemically treated vegetables and fruits, now seek her advice on natural farming methods. “Women farmers are now taking interest and approaching me to learn more about what I do and how it is keeping me and my family healthy,” Anjana proudly states.

An Inspiring Legacy of Anjana Devi:

Anjana Devi’s story is one of empowerment, resilience, and transformation. By stepping out of the traditional confines of her village, she has not only achieved personal success but has also paved the way for other women to find financial freedom and healthier lifestyles through sustainable farming practices. Anjana’s influence extends beyond agriculture; she is a beacon of hope and a role model for many women in her community. By conducting training and sharing her knowledge, she encourages others to embrace sustainable farming practices. Her story is a testament to the power of education and determination in transforming lives.
